The 44th Indiana Civil War Historical Association was founded in the spring of 2005 by a small number of veteran reenactors. We have since grown to almost 50 members and we have become very active in local events and preservation efforts. Such events and efforts have included the renovation and re-dedication of the Allen County Civil War monument located in Lawton Park on Spy Run Ave. in Fort Wayne.

Our membership consists of many individuals from many different walks of life, but we all have that one common bond, a love of history and the desire to share our knowledge of the past with others.  Education and Preservation are our main goals as an organization, we feel that our efforts are best needed and appreciated close to home.

Most of our events are within just 2 or 3 hours drive from Ft. Wayne, IN however we do attend one National event a year as are the requirements of the First Federal Division.
We are a unique reenactment unit in that we do not portray one specific branch of the military, we have members that portray Infantry, Artillery, Navy, Medical and of course Civilian impressions. We are one of the few units that can do both an Infantry and Artillery impression, which makes us very versatile and also safe on the battlefield. Our primary impression is of Western Federal Army Volunteers, however we have been known wear the butternut while playing with the big gun.

We also like to have a happy medium between civilian life and military life in camp. When we are in military camp we are all military, but when mess call sounds we are in civilian camp with our families eating and sharing the weekend with each other. We try to have all our civilians camp together at events as it results in closer friendships and efficient working relationships as reenacting partners. If you prefer to stay in military camp that is fine, but why would you when you get fed so well by the civilians?

We often go out to eat after events that are close to home, we are very
close as a unit because we are all friends both in and out of the hobby.
There always seems to be a good deal of laughing involved whenever
we get together.

We are always looking for new members to share our experiences with and help
them on their journey of learning more about history and sharing their
knowledge with others. We have members that live all over northeast Indiana including as far away as Warsaw and Muncie. If you are at all interested in joining or simply wanting to try it out for a weekend with no commitments attached please let us know, we have extra gear we can loan you for the weekend. If perhaps you just want to contact us for an event you would like us to attend, we would be more than happy to talk to you about our availability for the current and next season. If you just want to shoot us a line to learn more about the 44th Indiana Volunteers who served during the War, we would be happy to introduce you to our unit Historian. If you have ancestors that served in the original 44th we would love to hear from you as well, as you are part of why we do what we do. We are also available for school demonstrations, if you give us notice far enough in advance we can surely accommodate your desire for presenters.

Thank you for your interest in our group, we hope you decide to give us a try.

Sincerely,
          Members of the 44th ICWHA
