Colonel Hugh B. Reed
In 2008 it came to our attention that Hugh B. Reed who was the first Colonel of the 44th Indiana was never given a marker to acknowledge his service in defense of the Union. Why we do not know, but many of our members felt that it was our duty to take it upon ourselves to correct this oversight. After more than a year of research and fund raising our task was nearly complete.
On Memorial Day 2009 at Lindenwood Cemetery we dedicated our monument to Colonel Hugh Reed. Along with our members, concerned patriots of Allen County we honored this man's great contribution to his country and the men he lead and served.
Our ultimate goal as living historians is to REMEMBER, HONOR and TEACH. We do this so that the children of today and future generations will always remember the sacrifice that not only the people of the 1860's made, but also of the sacrifice that we are making today for freedom.
The members of the 44th ICWHA would like to make an acknowledgement to David Winship who's spirit and dedication to preservation inspires us all and for whom without this project would never have become a reality. Thanks Dave!
Thankyou.
